Rate equations Flashcards
reaction rate definition
Change in the amount of reactants/products over a certain period of time.
gradient formula
change in y/change in x
rate equations
A+B->C+D
rate=k{A}^m{B}^n
This equations show how rate is affected by concentration of reactants
k is constant
m and n are orders of reaction
if {A} changes, and the rate stays the same, what is the order of reaction?
zero order, so if {A} doubles, rate of reactions stays the same
If [A} is proportional to the rate, then what is the order of reaction
First order, as {A} doubles, rate doubles
If rate is proportional to {A}^2, then what is the order of the reaction
Second order
So if A doubles rate will be 2^2=4 times faster
if A triples rate will be = 3^2= 9 faster
if A quadruples rate will be = 4^2= 16 times faster
the bigger the value of k……….
- what affects rate constant?
the faster the rate of reaction
- rate constant is always the same at a particular temperature, however if you increase the temperature, rate constant will also increase.
what are the units for first, second, third order of reaction?
Order of reaction:
first: s^-1
second: mol^-1dm^3^s-1
third: mol^-2dm^6^s^-1
