Gas equilibria and Kp Flashcards
what is partial pressure
In a mixture of gases, each individual gas exerts its own pressure
what is a mole fraction
Its the proportion of gas mixture that is made up of a particular gas
eg 4 moles of gas in total, and if 2 moles is gas A
then mole fraction of gas A is 1/2
mole fraction FORMULA
number of moles of gas / total number of moles of gas in a mixture
Partial pressure formula
mole fraction of gas x Total pressure of the mixture
what’s the different between kp and kc
kp is for partial pressure ( gases)
kc is for concentrations
kp formula way to remember
products/reactants
with their respective big numbers acting as powers
to work out kp units…
Use kpa as a unit
and work out the same way like we did for kc
what is kp affected by
and how does changing this thing affect equilibrium
ONLY affected by temperature just like kc
changing temperature changes how much product is formed at equilibrium, this changes the mole fractions of gases present, which changes partial pressures
if amount of product decreases then kp……
decreases
What is a homogenous equilibrium system?
One in which everything in the equilibrium mixture is in the SAME PHASE
