What is always important to remember when bandaging a raptor?
- Always pad under Vet Wrap/Elasticon → constricts after application
- Never constrict the thoracic cavity tightly → can’t breath
How do you glove capture a rapture?
Casting
- Non-dominant hand distracts bird
- Grab feet with dominant hand
- Just about the feet
- Index finger btwn legs
- Control wings with free hand
- Hang bird upside down
What do you use to clean & flush wounds on birds?
Cholorhex & sterline saline
(NO ALCOHOL)
How can you remove maggots from wounds in birds?
Dawn dish soap & dilute Betadine
What is a great splint material for use in Raptors?
Vetlyte
(moldable plastic)
What is important to remember when working with splints/bandages in raptors?
Distal extremeties cannot handle pulling forces well
Avoid excess weight in these regions
If a bird’s foot is damaged, what is the most appropriate way to bandage it?
Ball foot bandage
What is important to watch out for in raptors w/ bandages?
- joint freezing
- vascular constriction
- wild animals heal faster than domestics –> if not healing, may need another approach
When does Pododermatitis typically occur in birds?
What are the agents typically responsible (2)?
- Secondary to obesity & abnormal perching surfaces
- Staph & Strep
When is it illegal to release a raptor?
If there have been alterations to the digits/feet (amputations)
(alters their ability to hunt)
How frequently do you change the dressings when dealing with Pododermatitis?
Every day to 2 days
What region is prone to Joint Freeze after prolonged bandaging?

- Patagium/Inguinal region
- Use of PROM
- passive range of motion therapy
