Rapid tranquilisation protocol

A

Only used as a last resort if an agitate pt is at risk to themselves or to others

Lorazepam 1-2mg PO/ IM OR
Haloperidol 2-5mg PO / IM

Notes

A

Use oral route if possible
Half doses in elderly / renal failure
Haloperidol CI in PD, lewy body dementia, alcohol withdrawal and heart problems
Ensure procyclidine 5-10mg IM / IV is available if using haloperidol to counteract dystonia if needed

Repeating doses

A

30-60 min intervals if required, up to 3 times
oral therapy takes 45-60 mins to take effect, IM therapy takes 30 mins
if fails call anaesthetic / intensive care team for sedation

obs every 30 min in light sedation, every 15 min in deep sedation (reduced GCS)
