Q

Why can Calcium Carbonate reduce the efficacy of levofloxacin in a patient being treated with a UT?

A

Calcium carbonate, contain polyvalent cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, and Fe2+), which directly bind levofloxacin and prevent its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore levofloxacin was not effective in treating this patient’s prostatitis. In general, most fluoroquinolones should be avoided in patients taking calcium carbonate because it decreases the absorption of fluoroquinolones, making the antibiotics ineffective.
