How does a doctor classify a brain injury?
Mild, moderate or severe. This is category is determined by the initial length of time the patient was unconscious. These may not predict the outcome in a person’s life.
What is a mild TBI?
Also referred to as a concussion. Loss of consciousness is less than 15 minutes. Any memory loss of the event or feels dazed or confused.
What is a moderate TBI?
Loss of consciousness for 15 minutes to a couple of hours, followed by confusion for a couple of days/weeks.

Loss of consciousness for 6 or more hours.
What is the Glascow Coma Scale?

What is the JFK coma recovery scale?
Measures hearing, visual, movement, communication and arousal to measure long term progress to gauge recovery.
What are adjunctive methods?
Used to prepare the client for occupational performance; i.e. exercise, facilitation and inhibition techniques, positioning, splinting and certain modalities. OT assesses and remediates.
What are enabling activities?
Steps towards the ability to preform a purposeful activity. Some clients are not ready to perform an activity so this is more of a practice. Examples include driving simulators, tabletop practice activities. Equipment can be considered enabling (e.g. wheelchairs). OT continues to assess, remediate and begins to teach performance areas.
What are purposeful activities?
Activities that have a goal that are purposeful to the patient.
What are occupation based activities?
activities that the OT engages the patient in their own environment. OT’s involvement should decrease as the patient’s involvement increases
