Q

What is Primary vs Secondary Peristalsistis?

A

Secondary peristalsis refers to peristalsis activated by esophageal distention. This can occur physiologically by food left behind after the primary peristaltic wave has passed, or by refluxed contents from the stomach.

Primary peristalsis is the peristaltic wave triggered by the swallowing center. The peristaltic contraction wave travels at a speed of 2 cm/s and correlates with manometry-recorded contractions.
