Local affect on nasal mucosa or eyes
Does not cross biological membranes well
How do mast cell stabilizers work?
Inhibit PLA-induced degranulation of sensitized mast cells
Inhibits release of mediators of Type I allergic rxns–including histamine and cysteinyl leukotrienes
What drug is an agonists for both alpha and beta receptors, and used in cases of anaphylaxis?
Epinephrine
Besides affecting blood vessels, what else does epinephrine do?
Decongestion–inhibits adenyl cyclase
Do pregnant/breast-feeding women need to worry about epinephrine?
Yes…crosses placenta and distributes into breast milk
What eye condition is epinephrine contraindicated in?
Closed-angle glaucoma
Besides anaphylaxis, when else can epinephrine be used?
In conjunction with local anesthetics
What is the name of the drug that is an anti-IgE antibody?
Omalizumab
When is omalizumab used?
Patients with allergic asthma that is resistant to inhaled steroids and long-acting beta-2 agonists
