3
Q

Why does LAFD carry 750 ft. of 4”?

A

○ Hydrants are spaced at most 600 feet away in low density residential, and if each stick of hose can range from 40-50 feet, then 15 sticks of hose at 50’ would be 750’ but if the stick was 40’, you could still reach 600’.

○ Captain Randy Beech, engine 52 laid out the whole bed, didn’t have enough supply line. He wrote letters to get more hose on the engines and cited division 9 of the fire code, low density to get more than 600’ of hose on the engines

○ Another reason for 600’. If you lay a big fire where you have the long distance hydrant spacing and you use up 600’, you still have 100’ which is needed to supply a ladder pipe plus 50’ in reserve for a burst section
