Q

Nerve stimulation during regional anesthesia is an example of what kind of pain?

A

Paresthesia

17
Q

White blood cells can be divided into what two categories?

A

Granulocytes

Agranulocytes

18
Q

What three cells are in Granulocytes?

A

Neutrophils - Fight bacterial and fungal infection (most abundant)

Basophils - Essential component of hypersensitivity reaction, Epi prevents degranulation by binding to beta 2 receptors, and Release histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins

Eosinophils - Defend against parasites

19
Q

What are two agranulocytes?

A

Monocytes - Phagocytosis, release cytokines, and present pieces of pathogens to T-lymphocytes

Lymphocytes

  • B-Lymphocyte (Humoral immunity - Produce antibodies)
  • T-lymphocyte (cell mediated immunity - does not produce antibodies)
20
Q

What two chemotherapeutics will cause Bone marrow suppression?

A

5-fluorouracil

Methotrexate

Both are Antimetabolite

21
Q

What Alkylating agent can cause acoustic n. injury and is nephrotoxic?

A

Cisplatin

22
Q

What tubilin-binding drugs can cause peripheral neuropathy?

A

Vincristine

Vinblastine

23
Q

What Antitumor antibiotic is cardiotoxic?

A

Doxorubicin

24
Q

What antitumor antibiotic causes Pulmonary fibrosis?

A

Belomycin

Keep FiO2 <= 30 percent

25
Q

Which anticonvulsants are hepatic enzyme inducers?

A

Carbamazepine

Phenytoin

26
Q

Which anticonvsulant drug is a hepatic enzyme inhibitor?

A

Valproic acid

This slows phenytoin metabolism, it also displaces phenytoin from plasma proteins

27
Q

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

A

Destruction of dopaminergic neurons in the basal ganglia.

Increased Ach in the basal ganglia increases GABA activity in the thalamus. (GABA is an inhibitor neurotransmitter therefore it suppresses the thalamus)

Thalamic inhibition suppresses the cortical motor system and motor areas in the brainstem. This leads to an over activity of the extrapyramidal system.

28
Q

Name some antidopaminergic drugs that may exacerbate extrapyramidal s/sx of parkinsons disease?

A

This drugs are contraindicated in Parkinsons disease.

Metoclopramide

Butyrophenones (haloperidol and droperiodol)

Phenothiazines (promethazine)

29
Q

Anterior Spinal Artery Syndrome is also known as?

A

Becks Syndrome

  • Flaccid paralysis of the lower extremities
  • Bowel and bladder dysfunction
  • Loss of temperature and pain senstation
  • Preserved touch and proprioception
