Random Flashcards
What do you call pain due to a stimulus that does not normally produce pain?
Alloydynia
Fibromyalgia is an example of what kind of pain?
Alloydynia
Pain due to a stimulus that does not normally produce pain
What do you call a stimulus that is normally expected to produce pain?
Algogenic
Surgical incision is an example of what kind of pain?
Algogenic
A stimulus that is normally expected to produce pain
What would you call something when there is no pain that is sensed in response to a stimulus that produces pain?
Analgesia
What is an example of an opioid analgesics relieving pain from a kidney stone?
Analgesia
There is no pain that is sensed in response to a stimulus that produces pain
What about you call an abnormal and unpleasant sense of touch?
Dysesthesia
A burning sensation from diabetic neuropathy is an example of what kind of pain?
Dysesthesia
An abnormal and unpleasant sense of touch
What would you call an exaggerated pain response to a painful stimulus?
Hyperalgesia
Opioid induced hyperalgesia is caused by what mediation?
Remifentanil
What would you call pain that is localized to a dermatome?
Neuralgia
Hepres zoster (shingles) can produce what kind of pain?
Neuralgia
Pain that is localized to a dermatome
What would be the term for impaired nerve function?
Neuropathy
Silent myocardial ischemia from diabetic neuropathy would be an example of?
Neuropathy
Impaired nerve function
What is abnormal sensation described as pins and needles?
Paresthesia
Nerve stimulation during regional anesthesia is an example of what kind of pain?
Paresthesia
Abnormal sensation described as pins and needles
White blood cells can be divided into what two categories?
Granulocytes
Agranulocytes
What three cells are in Granulocytes?
Neutrophils - Fight bacterial and fungal infection (most abundant)
Basophils - Essential component of hypersensitivity reaction, Epi prevents degranulation by binding to beta 2 receptors, and Release histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins
Eosinophils - Defend against parasites
What are two agranulocytes?
Monocytes - Phagocytosis, release cytokines, and present pieces of pathogens to T-lymphocytes
Lymphocytes
- B-Lymphocyte (Humoral immunity - Produce antibodies)
- T-lymphocyte (cell mediated immunity - does not produce antibodies)
What two chemotherapeutics will cause Bone marrow suppression?
5-fluorouracil
Methotrexate
Both are Antimetabolite
What Alkylating agent can cause acoustic n. injury and is nephrotoxic?
Cisplatin
What tubilin-binding drugs can cause peripheral neuropathy?
Vincristine
Vinblastine
What Antitumor antibiotic is cardiotoxic?
Doxorubicin
What antitumor antibiotic causes Pulmonary fibrosis?
Belomycin
Keep FiO2 <= 30 percent
Which anticonvulsants are hepatic enzyme inducers?
Carbamazepine
Phenytoin
Which anticonvsulant drug is a hepatic enzyme inhibitor?
Valproic acid
This slows phenytoin metabolism, it also displaces phenytoin from plasma proteins
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Destruction of dopaminergic neurons in the basal ganglia.
Increased Ach in the basal ganglia increases GABA activity in the thalamus. (GABA is an inhibitor neurotransmitter therefore it suppresses the thalamus)
Thalamic inhibition suppresses the cortical motor system and motor areas in the brainstem. This leads to an over activity of the extrapyramidal system.
Name some antidopaminergic drugs that may exacerbate extrapyramidal s/sx of parkinsons disease?
This drugs are contraindicated in Parkinsons disease.
Metoclopramide
Butyrophenones (haloperidol and droperiodol)
Phenothiazines (promethazine)
Anterior Spinal Artery Syndrome is also known as?
Becks Syndrome
- Flaccid paralysis of the lower extremities
- Bowel and bladder dysfunction
- Loss of temperature and pain senstation
- Preserved touch and proprioception
