Random Flashcards
What is the analytical method used to separate the substances in a mixture (and identify them)?
Chromatography
What are the two phases of chromatography?
Stationary and mobile
What happens in the stationary phase of chromatography?
Molecules can’t move
What happens in the mobile phase of chromatography?
Molecules can move (the solvent)
What’s an example of the stationary phase?
Chromatography paper
What’s an example of the mobile phase?
Water or ethanol
What happens to substances that are more soluble in the mobile phase?
Move further
What happens to pure substances in chromatography?
Will only ever form one spot
What is the Rf value?
Ratio between distance travelled by the dissolved substance and solvent (solution-which climes the paper)
How to calculate the Rf value?
Distance travelled by substance ,divided by the distance traveled by solvent
