Q
Nitrates like ‘nitroglycerin, nitroprusside, hydralazine, enalapril’ have traces of cyanide in them, so you’d want to watch out for

Cyanide toxicity
3
Q
TPN - what complications can we expect?
A
Hyperglycemia
Infection
Air Embolism
Dehydration
- Dextrose 50% has glucose. Can delay healing
- Can increase the risk of CLABSI infection bc fungus and bacteria would be attracted to dextrose.
- dehydration is possible bc of hyperglycemia; if glucose concentration is high it will trigger osmotic diuresis- increased urination

Q
Pyloric Stenosis characteristics
A
- projectile vomiting; especially right after a feeding, is the characteristic sign of pyloric stenosis. Since the pylorus, the opening from the stomach into the duodenum, is hardened and stiffened, it does not allow food to pass from the stomach into the duodenum. This means that after a feeding, the food cannot pass down, so it comes up in the form of projectile vomiting.
- olive-shaped mass: epigastric region near the umbilicus
