RAM Flashcards
RAM
The short term memory of the computer. Once the computer is powered off, the data is cleared.
DRAM aka Dynamic Random Access Memory
When and 1 or 0 is sent to DRAM it stores each bit in a microscopic compasitor. These are put into chips and stored on the RAM and store data.
Double Data Rate SDRAM or DDR SDRAM
Has 4 iterations:
DDR1
DDR2
DDR3
DDR4 (the fastest/latest one)
(Faster RAMS means programs can be run faster)
Chipset
Decides how components talk to each other. Allows us to manage data between the CPU, RAM and peripherals.
Northridge
A chipset that interconnect RAM and video cards.
Southbridge
A chipset that maintains IO (aka input/output) controllers. Ex: hard drives and USB devices that IO
Peripherals
External devices we connect to our computer, like a mouse, keyboard and monitor.
Expansion slots
Give us the ability to increase the functionality of our computer.
PCI Express
Peripheral component interconnect express.
An expansion slot.
Looks like a small circuit board
Form Factor
Determines the amount we can put in and the amount of space we’ll have.
ATX or Advanced technology extended
Most common form factor. Comes in different sizes.
ITX or Information Technology Extended form factor
Smaller than ATX Examples: mini ITX, nano ITX and pico ITX
