Bit
Smallest unit of a data storage. Can store 1 binary digit. A 1 or 0
Byte
Comprised of 8 bits. A single byte can store a letter, number or symbol.
Kilobyte (KB)
Made up of 1,024 bytes
Megabyte (MB)
Made up of 1,024 kilobytes
Gigabyte (GB)
Made up of 1,024 megabytes
Terabyte (TB)
Made up of 1,024 gigabytes
Hard Disc Drives or HDDs
A hard drive type. Use spinning platter and mechanical arm to read and write information.
RPM or Revolution Per Minute
The speed that the player rotates in a hard drive that allows you to read and write data faster. Higher RPMs mean faster hard drives.
Solid State Drive or SSD
Have no moving parts. Made similar to USB stick. On a microchip. More expensive than HHD.
SATA or Serial ATA
Interface which uses one cable for data transfers
Ata interface
Allows for the transfer of data between the storage device and the computer
Hot Swappable
Means you don’t have to turn off your machine to plug in a data drive
NVMe or NVM Express
A standard interface that can keep up with the speeds of the newest SSDs. Faster than SATA interfaces.
