raine evaluation Flashcards
ethical issues and social implications and methodology
ethics
valid consent
as they were murderers who pleaded guilty by reason of insanity , they may not have been mentally competent to provide valid consent
ethics
psychological harm
participants may not have fully understood what they were required to do , may have found performance task difficult and this could have possibly lowered the participants self esteem
ethics
right to withdraw
may have not realised what was involved in a pet scan , may have found this to be a distressing experience , may not have fully understood their right to withdraw at any time
social implications
socially sensitive research
research that has consequences for the larger group of participants who are involved
as people who may have the same brain abnormalities , may believe they may turn into a murderer
methodology
quasi experiment
causal conclusions
as the independent variable of this study (ngri or not) was already existing and was not manipulated , means causal conclusions cannot be justified
methodology
biology explanation
findings do not show that violent behaviour isnt soley due to biology
raine suggests that psychological, cultural and situational factors play roles too
makes the explanation incomplete
methodology
pet scans
allowed researchers to study the brain in a way that was previously not possible , used to rely on post mortems , pet scans allow them to study detailed regions of the brain whilst active
procedures
sample
the sample were not typical violent murderers , so the findings do not show that all violent offenders have such brain dysfunctions , can only link to violent offenders who have a diagnosed mental disorder , conclusions are restricted to just violent and not murders and not including violent crimes that aren’t murder
