Radium Girls Flashcards
during what years?
1916-1917
“undark” watches
aggressively marketed to general public by the US Radium Corp.
The work
(about 4 thousand workers)
mixed glue, water and radium powder
using brushes to paint watch dials
instructed to use their mouths to point the brushes
Claims rejected
US Radium Corp. hired doctors to diagnose girls with other disease such as phossy jaw or syphillis to discredit their claims
Drinker
he was hired by US Radium Coperation and reported blood disease. (the corporation made Drinker say he wouldn’t publish the report)
US Radium Corp changed Drinkers report to say all workers were healthy and then submitted the false report to the US Labor Bureau
Drinker eventually found out about the change to his report and Published the original report to expose US Radium Corp.
Trial and Settlement
settlement was eventually reached -essentially because workers (and their families) needed the money and were in dire medical need (and they didn’t have long to live)
This paved the way for the Right of workers to sue employers for illnesses caused by work.
Industrial hygiene
aka occupational health
due to the lawsuit and public attention of radium girls a new field of PH emerged.
