pellagra investigation

A

Tx: Butterfly skin rash, hallucination, insane, tiredness, loss of weight, sleepy, muscle pain

4D’s
Dermatitis
Diarrhea
Dimentia
Death

Dietary Deficiency
Orphanages (staff had no pellagra but inmates and patients did)
Goldberger change in in diet promote cure and prevention
Only had pork, cornbread (lacked vitamins)

Experiments
Orphanages in Jackson, Mississippi had better diet (vegetables, protein, milk, dairy)
Because of better diet, Pellagra patients got better and stop spread of disease

“Filth Parties”
Volunteers injected and ingested blood, urine and poo to stop spread disease (even got his wife to do it)
