Q

Where does pulmonary oedema affect dogs and cats?

A

Dogs: Caudal lung lobes
Cats: less predictable (may be anywhere, may be localised patch mimicing other pathologies eg. bronchopnumonia)
- if in doubt repeat rads after 12hrs diuresis and check for change (oedema will go, other causes unlikely to change)

6
Q

How may the caudal vena cava position indicate cardiac enlargement?

A

should be downhill into the heart, if enlarged may go uphill into heart

Q

What subjective measurements can be used to define cardiomegaly?

A
  • proportion of thoracic diameter occupied
  • number of intercostal spaces occupied
  • shape
  • position of trachea
  • distance from heart to diaphragm

13
Q

What is the VHS? Is this used nowadays?

A
  • add diameter and width of heart
  • compare with no. spinous processes
    > normal range not correct for most dogs
    > not shown to make diagnosis any more accurate
    > many cardiac diseases don’t enlarge heart anyway

14
Q

Does the cardiac silhouette look the same on left and right lateral?

- looks more round in left lat, looks more normal in right lat

16
Q

Where do the RA and RV lie roughly within the cardiac silhouette?

A
  • both cranial aspects on heart
17
Q

Where do LA, LV and aorta lie roughly within the cardiac silhouette?

A
  • caudal dorsal and ventral parts of the heart
18
Q

Where is an enlarged LA seen on the cardiac silhouette?

A

3 oclock position on dorsoventral

19
Q

How does the normal cardiac silhouette differ in golden retirievers, dobermans and setters/afghans?

A

retrievers: square and broad
dobermans: upright straight caudal border
setters: tall, slim

20
Q

What is seen on cardiac silhouette with LV enlargement?

A

RLat view: ^DV dimension

DV view: enlongated cardiac silhouette

21
Q

What is seen on cardiac silhouette with LA enlargement?

A

RLat view: ^DV dimension, bulge on dorsocaudal aspect, dorsal displacement of left caudal bronchus
DV view: focal bulge on mid-left border

22
Q

What is seen on cardiac silhouette with RV enlargement?

A

RLat view: ^Cr-Cd dimension, ^ sternal contact

DV view: curved R border

23
Q

What is seen on cardiac silhouette with RA enlargement?

A

RLat view: ^Cr - Cd

DV view: curved R border, NO ^ sternal contact

24
Q

Which disease most comonly causes ^ LA?

A

Mitral valve disease

25
Q

What is radiography ultimately effective for diagnosing?

A

Heart failure

- not sensitive for guiding specific diagnosis or specific chamber enlargement

26
Q

Is LA bulge seen in cats?

A

Not on lateral

- slighlty more clear on DV
