The developing embryo or fetus has maximum sensitivity to radiation in the first 14 days after conception. The effect of radiation exposure at this gestational age is characterized as an “all or none” phenomenon, meaning that radiation exposure will result in pregnancy loss or the pregnancy will be unaffected. Congenital anomalies, developmental delay, and growth restriction are not seen until later gestational ages with exposure exceeding 50 mGy.
