Radiation Biology Flashcards
stochastic
random/unpredictable effects
as exposure increases, probability of effects increases
dose doesn’t have an affect on severity of effects
cancers, genetic mutations
deterministic effects
predictable effects
at a predictable exposure threshold, certain effects will appear
cataracts, epilation, skin erythema
direct effect
photon interacts with DNA molecule (uncommon)
indirect effect
photon interacts with water in cell (most common) which will then damage DNA
base lesions
easily repaired
single strand breaks
usually repaired
double strand breaks
unrepaired (death, mutation)
short term effects
occur within a few days or hours
skin burns, hair loss, diminished sperm count, ARS
are deterministic effects
long term effects
occur years after exposure
cancer, genetic effects, cataracts
most are stochastic
somatic
harm caused to the body of the exposed person
genetic
harm passed on to future generations through harm caused to reproductive cells
