Radiation Flashcards
The energy emitted and transferred through matter.
Radiation
Occurs when an electromagnetic radiation passes close to an orbital electron of an atom and transfer sufficient energy to the electron to remove it from the atom.
IONIZATION
The orbital electron and the atom which it was separated are called
Ion Pair
Matter that intercepts radiation and absorbs part or all of it.
IRRADIATION
Matter that has been irradiated and becomes a source of radiation.
CONTAMINATION
TYPES OF RADIATION:
- ACCORDING TO DIRECTION OF PROPAGATION
- ACCORDING TO SOURCE
- ACCORDING TO ABILITY TO IONIZE
- ACCORDING TO THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTIC
- RADIATION ACCORDING TO DIRECTION OF PROPAGATION EXAMPLE
Longitudinal - The movement of particles are parallel to the direction of the wave
Transverse-
The movement of particles are perpendicular to the direction of the wave
- RADIATION ACCORDING TO SOURCE
EXAMPLE
Natural Environmental Radiation- Also known as background radiation
Artificial Radiation - Also known as Man-made Radiation
- RADIATION ACCORDING TO ABILITY TO IONIZE
Non-ionizing radiation - Radiation for which the mechanism of action in tissue does not directly ionize atomic or molecular systems through a single interaction.
Ionizing radiation- Radiation that is capable of ionization.
- RADIATION ACCORDING TO THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTIC
Particulate Radiation
