radiation Flashcards
what is activity?
the number of radioactive transformations per second that occur in a particular radionuclide
what is count rate and how is it measured?
Count-rate is the number of decays recorded each second by a detector
what are alpha beta and gamma radiation the best for a given job?
alpha is the most ionising, least penetrating, can be stopped by a piece of paper
beta is moderately ionising, moderately penetrating, can be stopped by a few mm of aluminium foil
gamma is least ionising, most penetrating, can be stopped by several metres of concrete or lead
how can we protect from radiation?
irradiation = lead clothes
contamination = radiation suit
what is background radiation and what are its sources?
Naturally occurring radioactive minerals in the ground, soil, and water produce background radiation.
what is radiation dose measured in?
Sieverts
how do the hazards associated with radioactive material differ according to the half-life?
If a substance has a short half life it, it will release its radiation much more quickly and this can be dangerous as it will release a lot of radiation in a short amount of time
how is unclear radiation used in medicine?
to see how organs or tissue are functioning (for diagnosis) or to target and destroy damaged or diseased organs or tissue (for treatment).
