Parasites
What is dermatophytosis in rabbits, how is it diagnosed, and what is the treatment
-It is ringworm caused by T. Mentagraphytes in outdoor rabbits or M.Canis in pet rabbits, and it is zoonotic
-Diagnosis: clin signs (hair loss and crusting around eyes nose and feet, mild pruritus), hair pluck and microscopy or fungal culture
-Treatment: itraconazole 3-6 weeks, treat all in contacts and disinfect environment
What is the treatment for rabbit ectoparasites
-Ivermectins (subcut or topical)
-2-3 treatments every 7-14 days (get all stages of lifecycle)
-Treat all in-contacts
Can you use Fipronil in rabbits
-NO!! Highly toxic, causes seizures, neuro signs, and can be fatal
What is fly strike in rabbits, what are the risk factors, and what is the treatment
-Blowflies lay eggs on wounds or soiled skin, eggs hatch into L1 maggots, moult to L2 and L3 which cause tissue damage
-Risk factors: sick/wounded rabbits, lack of caecotrophy, temp outside above 9-11C and 60% humidity
-Treatment: manually remove maggots, clean wound, supportive care, pain relief, Ivermectin 14 days
What types of fleas affect rabbits and what is the treatment
-Ctenocephalides felis (cat flea), Spilopysllus cuniculi (rabbit flea, vector myxomatosis)
-Treatment: Advocate/selamectin

-Cheyletiella parasitovorax (walking dandruff, can survive 10 days off host, zoonotic)
-Diagnosed via coat brushing
-Treatment: ivermectin7-14 days, treat all in contacts and environment
What mite is found in the ear of rabbits, what are the clinical signs of ear mites, and what is the treatment
-Psoroptes cuniculi, a non burrowing mite that can live 3 weeks off the host
-Clin signs: intense inflammation, painful ears, erythema, dry crusting, can spread to face and neck and trunk and perineum
-Treatment: ivermectin for 7-14 days, treat all in contacts, dont remove crusts!! Too painful
