Rabbits Flashcards

1
Q

Rectal prolapse in two rabbits with rectal neoplasia

A

Two adult pet rabbits presenting for prolapse, still eating/drinking. In both cases the rectal mass was palpable (not sure if by rectal (yikes) or abdominal palpation)? CBC/Chem, AUS & rads wnl both rabbits. Both went to surgery. Inflammatory polyp and a leiomyosarcoma. Both have done great for 2-3 years post op.

Q

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculi): 39 cases (1998-2019)

A

Wide range in cases; predilection for ears and feet and possibly lighter-colored rabbits. One case had a papillomavirus involved, other 16 that were tested did not. Aggressive surgical margins provided best outcomes.

Q

Outcomes and survival times of client-owned rabbits diagnosed with thymoma and treated with either prednisolone or radiotherapy, or left untreated

A

Highly suspected or confirmed thymoma (hmm). intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) (n = 5) and prednisolone therapy alone (n = 18). A cohort of rabbits that received no treatment (n = 10) was also evaluated and used for comparison. IMRT did not prolong survival above those with no treatment, but did have better QOL/less clinical signs for most of that period. Prednisolone extended survival times!

Q

The effects of single-dose administration of two topical antiglaucoma medications, 0.005% latanoprost and 0.125% demecarium bromide, on intraocular pressure and iridocorneal angle parameters in nonglaucomatous companion rabbits

A

each applied to one eye of 20 mixed breed rabbits. Latanoprost did not affect IOP, but increased the gonioscopy score (which I guess is good). Demecarium decreased the gonioscopy score and increased IOP. Ok to try latanoprost, do not use demecarium.

Q

Hepatic coccidiosis in two pet rabbits

A

Yikes. Two young emaciated rabbits presented with diarrhea. Microscopic fecal examination identified ellipsoidal oocysts. Both rabbits died. on necropsy both livers were basically replaced by damaged hepatocytes and dilated bile ducts, with intrahepatic coccidia etc. Ultrasound changes were present but not that marked.
Labwork:
Increased: Eosinophils, platelets, ALP, ALT, GGT, globulins
Decreased: albumin, amylase, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine
basically they died of liver failure. Yeesh

Q

Diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma in client-owned rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus): 16 eyes from 11 rabbits (2008–2019)

A

Median IOP at diagnosis was 39 mmHg (26-55 mmHg) with various clinical signs at presentation including vision loss (11 rabbits, 16 eyes), buphthalmia (8 rabbits, 11 eyes), corneal edema (4 rabbits, 5 eyes), and optic nerve head cupping (5 rabbits, 6 eyes). Other ocular examination findings included cataracts (5 rabbits, 8 eyes) and uveitis (4 rabbits, 8 eyes). Two rabbits were seropositive for Encephalitozoon cuniculi. All eyes were initially treated with topical medications, with 10 eyes from 7 rabbits refractory to initial medical management. Two rabbits (3 eyes) showed progressive reduction in IOPs with long-term continuing topical therapy. Two rabbits (2 eyes) underwent unilateral enucleation and 3 rabbits (5 eyes) received intravitreal gentamicin injections.

Q

Contrast echocardiography for detecting bidirectional shunting in a rabbit with an atrial septal defect

A

Cardiomegaly found incidentally in 3 yo rabbit. Echo + agitated saline contrast echocardiography can be easily performed and provides an accurate assessment of hemodynamic status in rabbit. Therefore, it should be widely considered for the diagnosis of rare congenital cardiac defects in rabbits. survived another 2 years after dx, died of CHF.

Q

Tracheal resection and anastomosis for treatment of tracheal collapse in a rabbit

A

A 7-year-old rabbit with concurrent upper respiratory disease was diagnosed with tracheal collapse using diagnostic imaging and tracheoscopy. Tracheal resection and anastomosis was performed to remove the affected area and produced resolution of clinical signs for approximately 6 months. The patient’s signs eventually returned due to development of granulation tissue at the anastomosis site.
