guinea pigs and chinch Flashcards
Development and validation of an endoscopic myringotomy technique to treat otitis media and interna in a case series of three guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus)
medical mgmt of otitis media/interna often doesn’t work
TECA-LBO can kill GPs
Basically, used an endoscope to flush the tympanic bulla, collect samples for culture. in 2/3 GPs major improvement in signs.
Effects of oral cisapride administration in chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) with experimentally induced fecal output reduction
sedated the chinchillas, which decreased fecal output. Cisapride + critical care slightly improved fecal output (statistically significant but not clinically so)
Cisapride alone did diddlysquat. (10 mg/kg PO q12h)
Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection in a guinea pig with granulomatous encephalitis
dehydrated, cold, anorexic + neuro signs; supportive care & eventually CT - could see ovoid, hypodense lesions in the temporal lobe. got bigger over time. euthanized. found ECUN in the lesions.
pradofloxacin in healthy chinch
given PO @ 5,10,25 mg/kg. All chinch profoundly hyporexic. remained hyporexic for 7d after administration! still BAR per testers. Yikes.
Successful Medical Management of a Bezoar in a Peruvian Guinea Pig (Cavia Porcellus)
dilated stomach, suspected trichobezoar obstruction. NG tube, aggressive medical management, gradual improvement over the course of like 6 days of therapy.
Macrodontia in Guinea Pigs (Cavia porcellus): -Radiological findings and localisation in 131 patients
90% of the patients had at least one macrodont tooth.
ANTINOCICEPTIVE EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF SUBCUTANEOUS TRAMADOL IN CHINCHILLAS (CHINCHILLA LANIGERA)
doses ranged from 10-60 mg/kg SC. no thermal antinociception at any dose, and significant neuro side effects starting at 40, worsening at 60. No good.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA IN CHINCHILLAS: A REVIEW OF THREE CASES
all chinchies were >15 yo, all had ulcerated/self mutilating tumors on the limbs. all euthanized. no papillomaviruses found in the 3 samples.
Development of a sedation assessment scale for comparing the sedative effects of alfaxalone-hydromorphone and ketamine-midazolam-hydromorphone for intravenous catheterization in the domestic rat (Rattus norvegicus)
A (5 mg/kg) H (0.2 mg/kg) sedated faster, but also wore off faster than the KMH protocol. Sedation scores were very consistent in the scale so seems to work.
Total Ear Canal Ablation and Temporary Bulla Fenestration for Treatment of Otitis Media in a Chinchilla (Chinchilla Laniger)
chinch had chronic otitis externa; did procedure to allow flushing - flushed for 5 weeks post op. had to do a temp tarsorraphy for facial nerve paralysis, but that resolved, as did the otitis signs. CT may have shown recurrence of the soft tissue material in the bulla (abstract maybe has a typo?) but clinically considered a success.
Surgical Resection of a Testicular Seminoma in a Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus)
5-6 day history of enlarged testicle. neutered GP. testicular seminoma with vascular invasion; but no recurrence @ 4 months after sx.
ASSESSMENT OF INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE BY APPLANATION AND REBOUND TONOMETRY IN GUINEA PIGS OF DIFFERENT AGES
TonoPen vs TonoVet. Main results: they don’t always agree; TonoPen takes longer and can’t be done in GP < 3 months old.
Comparison of body temperature using digital, infrared, and tympanic thermometry in healthy ferrets (Mustela putorius furo)
So, in contrast to other study with rectal vs ear (only rectal worked), here they did rectal vs using an infrared on the dorsal skin. There was some (imperfect) agreement between rectal & the dorsal skin one. so it’s a possible alternative.
TREATMENT OF UNILATERAL PERINEAL HERNIAS IN 2 MALE CHINCHILLAS (CHINCHILLA LANIGERA)
2 adult intact male chinch. one herniated bladder, one fat. both treated with obturator flap transposition, both did well. no known underlying cause.
Spontaneous Splenic Hemangiosarcoma in a Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus)
sick GP, abdominal mass, US couldn’t tell what type; exploratory, removed spleen, dx HSA. survived 18 mo with no recurrence!
Case report of a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) with a surgically treated insulinoma
presentation was as you’d expect + head tilt. medical mgmt did not work, pancreatic nodulectomy bought them 4 months before recurrence/euthanasia.
SCROTAL VESICLE SEMINAL HERNIA IN AN INTACT MALE DOMESTIC GUINEA PIG
2 wk history progressive enlargement of scrotal sac. ultrasound showed the seminal vesicle & enlarged inguinal canal. neutered, inguinal hernia repaired. did well.
The association between bloodwork, signalment, and urolithiasis in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus)
basically, get rads on any GP where this is a possibility; bloodwork not an effective screen; however the odds of a urolith increase with anemia, azotemia, or hypophosphatemia.
urethral uroliths with a lone star in female GPs
This procedure is rapid, minimally invasive, technically simple, and cost effective in female guinea pigs with uroliths in the urinary orifice or distal urethra.
Treatment of hyperadrenocorticism in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)
3.5 yo intact female GP presented with typical signs of cushing’s. stimmed high, aus showed 2 small adrenal glands, which is weird, but OK; tx with trilostane until escaped control, at which point a large right adrenal mass was found
Cytomorphological characterization of lymphadenopathies in guinea pigs: study of 31 clinical cases
Used a fine-needle, nonaspirational technique for cytology. From 31 evaluated clinical cases, 64.5% were compatible with pseudoeosinophilic lymphadenitis, 22.6% compatible with reactive lymphatic node, 6.45% compatible with lymphoma, and 6.45% with Hodgkin’s-like lymphoma.
Comparison of axillary and inguinal body temperature to rectal temperature in healthy guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus)
just do rectal temps, too much error with other
CONJUNCTIVAL MICROFLORA IN GUINEA PIGS WITH AND WITHOUT SIGNS OF CONJUNCTIVITIS
Staphylococcus spp. (4/22; 18.1%) and Moraxella spp. (4/22; 18.1%) were respectively the most commonly isolated organisms in guinea pigs with signs of conjunctivitis; major bugs included f Moraxella spp., Clostridium spp., and Listeria spp.
In clinically healthy guinea pigs, the most commonly isolated bacterial organisms were Staphylococcus spp. (8/18; 44.4%) and Bacillus spp. (4/18; 22.2%), respectively.
CYSTOSCOPIC-GUIDED LITHOTRIPSY FOR THE REMOVAL OF A URETHRAL STONE IN A GUINEA PIG
tried to get a urethral stone out the normal ways, couldn’t; referred for scope/transurethral lithotripsy under GA; worked great.
Paradoxical Vestibular Syndrome Secondary to Temporal Bone Osteomyelitis and Chronic Otitis Interna in a Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus)
Head tilt and corneal ulcer were on opposite sides; had a horrible chronic otitis internal/osteomyelitis compressing R brainstem, causing paradoxical vestibular. Yikes.
PRIMARY INTRAOCULAR OSTEOSARCOMA WITH PULMONARY METASTASIS IN A GUINEA PIG (CAVIA PORCELLUS)
presented for eye FUBAR; survey rads & BW otherwise normal. enucleated & found primary intraocular osteosarc. 4 months later had pulmonary mets. Yeesh.
TOTAL BODY IRRADIATION FOR THE TREATMENT OF LYMPHOMA IN A GUINEA PIG (CAVIA PORCELLUS)
2 episodes of TBI, 49 days apart, for disseminated lymphoma, unknown type. survived about a month after the second treatment.
Pelodera strongyloides as a Cause of Severe Erythematous Dermatitis in 2 Guinea Pigs (Cavia porcellus)
Cutaneous nemotidiasis. normally the pelodera is a saprophytic nematode but it is capable of invading skin of mammals. found on skin scrape. gross.
Clinical Presentation, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Cholelithiasis in a Pet Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus)
pain, distended abdomen, respiratory effort. stones found on rads/ultrasound. no BW discussed. did a cholcystectomy. GP did great. apatite/weddellite? stone
Dental Disease and Periodontitis in a Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus)
JFC. second opinion 4 days after incisors clipped with nail trimmers @ another clinic. euthanized. Based on the postmortem results of the oral cavity examination, micro–computed tomography analysis, bacteriology, and histopathology, iatrogenic incisor malocclusion, incisor enamel fractures, dental disease, hepatic lipidosis, chronic purulent gingivitis/periodontitis caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella buccae, and dental caries were determined to be the final, postmortem diagnoses.
