RAAS Flashcards
What does RAAS stand for?
Renin - Angiotensin - Aldosterone - System
What does RAAS control?
Blood pressure
What does the kidney emit?
Renin
What are juxtaglomerular cells? What do they produce?
Prorenin; upon a drop in BP it is cleaved to form renin which is released into the blood
What does renin convert to?
A plasma protein called angiotensinogen, into angiotensin 1
What hormone does the liver produce?
Agiotensinogen
What coverts angiotensin 1 into angiotensin 2?
Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)
Where is the angiotensin converting enzyme located?
Lungs
What effects does angiotensin 2 have?
Systematic vasoconstriction, promotes sodium reabsorption, induces the release of aldosterone from the adrenal cortex, induces the posterior pituitary to release antidiuretic hormone
Atrial natriuretic peptide
Rise in BP results in stretch of the atria of the heart, triggering baroreceptors
What does atrial natriuretic peptide inhibit?
Juxtaglomerular apparatus in the kidney from releasing renin
What does renin cause
Vasoconstriction
