R22 Basics Flashcards
How long is the R22?
259” from front of skid to rear tail rotor.
345” from front of tip path plane to rear tail rotor.
How wide is the R22?
76” skid to skid
How tall is the R22?
107”
What is the diameter of the main rotor?
25’ 2”
What is the diameter of the tailrotor?
3’6”
What is the engine/powerplant of the R22?
Lycoming 0-360-J2A four cylinder, horizontally opposed, direct drive air cooled, carbureted, normally aspirated engine.
Describe the four cylinder engine.
.
What does horizontally opposed mean?
X
What does it mean that the engine is direct drive?
Direct power transfer to the upper and lower sheaves.
What does carbureted mean?
X
What does normally aspirated mean?
an internal combustion engine in which oxygen intake depends solely on atmospheric pressure and does not rely on forced induction through a turbocharger or a supercharger.
What is the horsepower of the engine?
145 BHP (derated) @ 2700 RPM
What is the maximum continuous rating in R22?
124 BHP at 2652 RPM (104% on tachometer)
What is the five minute takeoff rating in R22 Beta II?
131 BHP at 2652 RPM
What is the cooling system on the R22?
Direct drive squirrel cage blower.
Describe the direct drive squirrel-cage blower.
X
What is the max gross weight?
1370 lb.
What is the min gross weight?
920 lb.
What is the max weight per seat including baggage compartment?
240 lb.
Is aerobatic flight allowed in the R22?
No
What type of maneuvers are prohibited?
Low-G cyclic pushovers which can cause a catastrophic loss of lateral control.
How do you eliminate a low-G condition?
- immediately apply gentle aft cyclic.
- Should a right roll commence apply aft cyclic to reload rotor before applying lateral cyclic to stop the roll.
When is flight with the governor off allowed?
In-flight system malfunction or emergency procedures training.
What is the maximum operating density altitude?
14,000’
What is the capacity of the fuel tanks?
16.9 gallons in the main, 9.4 gallons in the aux for a total of 26.3 gallons.
What are the flight restrictions with regard to wind for a pilot with less than 200 hrs in helicopters and 50 hrs in the R22?
- Flight when surface winds exceed 25 kts.
- Flight when surface wind gust spreads exceed 15 kts.
- Continued flight in moderate, severe, or extreme turbulunce.
What should airspeed be adjusted to when encountering moderate, severe, or extreme turbulence?
60 KIAS and 0.7 Vne (72 KIAS) and no lower than 57 KIAS.
What is moderate turbulence?
Turbulence that causes:
1) changes in altitude and attitude
2) variations in indicated airspeed
3) aircraft occupants to feel definite strains against seat belts.
What type of rotor system does the R22 have?
Semi-rigid underslung rotor system that is free to tilt with respect to the main the rotor shaft on what is known as a teetering hinge.
What does the teetering hinge do?
Allows the blades to flap together as a unit. As one blade flaps up the other flaps down.
What does air cooled mean?
No water is used to cool the engine. No radiator.
