R Flashcards
Raceme
an inflorescence of stalked flowers in which the main axis continues to grow. The terminal flower is therefore the last to be dew loped.
Radical
arising from the base of the stem - as of leaves
Radiate
standing on and spreading from a common centre; a flower-head of the Asteraceae, which has ligulate (strap-shaped) flowers (ray florets) on the circumference and tubular flowers (disc florets) in the centre
Ray
all the ligulate (strap-shaped) flowers in the capitulum of Asteraceae
Ray florets
see ligule
the ligulate or strap-shaped flowers of the outer florets (or sometimes all the florets) in heads of Asteraceae
Receptacle
the swollen head of the flower-stalk (floral axis. torus or thalamus) on which the parts of a single flower are arranged. It is very variable. In some Proteaceae, Leguminosae and Caryophyllaceae it may be lengthened into a short stalk supporting the ovary. In many of
the Rosaceae. Myrtaceae and Thymelacaceae it is frequently hollowed out into a cup enclosing
the ovary, while the stamens, petals and sepals grow from the rim. In some members of
the Asteraceae it is the expanded apex of the peduncle on which the flowers are inserted and
surrounded by an involucre of bracts ( capitulum ).
Reflexed
abruptly bent or turned downward or backwards
Regular
as of flowers when the various parts, particularly the petals, are evenly spaced.
Reniform
kidney-shaped (as of leaf).
Resinous
sticky with an exudate of resin
Resupinate
bent back or upside down
Reticulate
applied to the venation of a leaf when the veins cross like the mesh of a net
Retrorse
bent or turned over backwards or downwards
Retuse
the end rounded and slightly dented
Revolute
when the edges of the leaves are rolled backwards towards the midrib
