What is a direct democracy?
Where citizens meet together to make the decisions via a vote
What is a representative democracy?
Where citizens elect leaders to make decisions for them
What are the four things necessary for a government to work?
1) Have to be a participant- it is our duty to vote
2) Must be understanding that we cannot get everything- cannot “go home”
3) Elected officials are essential- get big stuff taken care of
4) Democracy- you have ability to make decisions
ex: legalizing marijuana
What is a constitutional democracy?
Where the outline of government and rights that people have are written in document (constitution)
What are the four things necessary for a democracy to work?
1) Free and fair elections- not rigged
2) Acceptance of majority rule
3) Freedom of expression- w/o fear of rebellion
4) Educated electorate- know what they are doing
How did the gov. get the way it is today?
Went from monarchy to confederation gov.- weak national gov. and subunits to federal- power shared between states and gov.
How many branches did the Articles of Confederation have?
1- legislative- couldn’t carry out laws or decide guilt or innocence
Why couldn’t the AOC get anything done?
Members were not paid so didn’t show up and in order for a law to be passed, every state needed to approve
What were the main problems of the AOC?
1) financial problems- couldn’t bring in money in any way except ask states ex: war debt
2) foreign policy problems- US had to pay England but couldn’t so they set up forts so we could not expand
What happened with Spain?
Spain blocked Mississippi river and asked for money- states again said no
What happened with the Barbary Pirates?
Bpirates took all American vessels and asked for money- states said no again
When did individuals finally try finding answers for our government?
1786-1787 winter
What happened at the Constitutional convention?
Federalists push to make a new stronger central government and anti-federalists wanted to tweak the old one w/ weak central government (AOC)
What was consisted in the Connecticut Compromise?
1) Made bicameral legislature (2 house)
house of rep.- Virginia plan based on population
senate- equal representation between all states
2) slavery- 3/5 compromise
