Quiz 6 Flashcards
Coefficient of friction
A number representing the distance to sliding of two surfaces in contact; The drag factor of a vehicle or other object sliding on the roadway or other surface which is level. Represented by the symbol “mu”
Run-off
Run off occurs after a puddle of liquid accumulates beneath a vehicle and runs off in the direction of the grade present
Velocity
The rate of change of position in which direction and rapidity are elements; distance divided by time (if velocity is constant); a vector quantity. Measured in feet per second or meters per second
First harmful event
The location and the crash scene where the first damage or injury occurred. Also referred to as the classifying event, this is the point where jurisdiction over a crash scene is normally established
Contributing factors
Any circumstance present or action performed which may have contributed to the occurrence of a crash. These factors would include Highway/environment factors, driver factors and vehicle factors
Vehicle factors
An action or series of actions supported by physical evidence or observations, performed by a vehicle which contributed to the crash
Speed
The rate of change of position with respect to time. Measured in units of miles per hour
Drag factor
A number representing the acceleration or deceleration of a vehicle or other body as a decimal fraction of the acceleration of gravity. Represented by the symbol F
Skip skid
A breaking skidmark interrupted at frequent regular intervals; the skidmark made by a bouncing wheel on which breaks keep the wheel from turning
Critical speed
Velocity above which a particular highway curve, or curve demanded by a driver, could not be negotiated by a motor vehicle without exceeding the available traction force at the tires on a specific surface
Gap skid
A braking mark which is interrupted by release and reapplication of brakes or where the braking mark is terminated by the release of breaks before a crash
