quiz 4 Flashcards
Ligands are produced by?
The bODAEEE
2 primary ligands
1 hormones
2. neurotransmitters
Hormones are secreted by
ENDocrine glands
directly into the CIRCULATORY system
Hormones are either?
Amino acid based or steroid based
hormones may travel
Long distances
hormones are considered?
metabotropic because they change the metabolism of its target cell.
can influence cellular response such as mitosis.. etc
Neurotransmitters are secreted by ?
axon terminal knobs into a synaptic cleft.
Neurotransmitters are considered ionotropic IF?
binding to a receptor directly opens an ion channel
Neuortranmitters are considered metabotropic IF?
binding to a receptor results in changing its target cells’ metabolism (and indirectly opens ion channels)
Receptors are found on?
surface of cell (membrane) or in the cytosol of a cell (intracellular)
What are the two surface receptors
- ion channel linked receptor
- G protein linked receptor
Ion channel linked receptors are bound to?
an ion channel within the plasma membrane
G protein receptors can be used by both ?
neurotransmitter and hormones
Explain the process of G protein linked receptor
- ligand binds to a receptor that is complementary in shape
- this binding causes the receptor to change shape and interact with a g protein
- G protein changes shape and interacts with the enzyme adenylate cyclase
- adenylate cyclase catalyzes the conversion ATP to AMP.
- AMP activates other enzymes within the cell to initiate a metabolic change within the cell.
Ion channels are ?
large proteins and selectivly allow ions in and out
