Assistant director
The crew member whose primary responsibility is timing the show.
Back light
A light above and behind the talent to illuminate their head and shoulders and
separate them from the background—part of a three-point lighting setup.
Background light
Any light with the purpose of illuminating scenery as opposed to talent.
Barn doors
Adjustable flaps on the front of a spotlight, which allow some control over the spill
of the beam of light.
Camera operator
Crew member responsible for operating the camera.
Camera control unit CCU
Piece of equipment which allows remote control over certain
camera functions such as aperture, color balance, etc.
Character generator (CG)
Generic term for any graphics to be used in a video production.
Chroma key (green screen)
An effect in which a specific color (typically green) is
replaced by another video source.
Control Room
An area separate from the studio floor, that contains the video switcher, audio
board, director, technical director, etc.
Diffused light
Type of light produced by a flood light; produces a soft, even light with
indistinct shadows.
Direct light
Type of light produced by a spotlight; produces a distinct, directional light with
distinct shadows.
Director
Crew member who controls the entire production during shooting. Gives commands
to all other crew members.
Dissolve (mix)
A gradual transition between two images in which one image fades out while
another is fading in.
Dolly (camera movement)
Physically rolling the camera forward or backward.
“Execute” command from director
Second stage command given when the director wants
something to happen (Take camera, Cue talent, etc). Preceded by a ready command.
Fade
A type of dissolve transition which involves either coming from or going to a black
screen.
Fill light
A light used to fill in shadows created by the key light–part of a three-point lighting
setup.
Floodlight
A type of lighting instrument that produces a broad, diffused light with indistinct
shadows.
Floor director
The crew position responsible for relaying the director’s commands to
the studio floor.
Fresnel light
A type of adjustable lighting instrument that produces a narrow, hard light with
distinct shadows. Named for its glass lens, which contains concentric circles to focus the light.
Headroom
The space between the top of a subject’s head and the top of the TV screen.
Key (over video)
An effect in which one video element is superimposed over another—such as
a title or a chroma key.
Key light
The main source of illumination for a subject–part of a three-point lighting setup.
Lavaliere/ clip mic
A small unobtrusive microphone clipped to the front of the talent.
