Continuity
Style of editing in which action appears fluid and seamless and makes obvious sense in terms of time and place.
Cross fade
Audio transition in which one audio source fades out while another is fading in
Cut
Visual transition in which one shot instantaneously replaces another on screen.
Fastest, most common transition. Enhances fast-paced sequences.
Cutaway shot
A shot of some object/person away from the primary scene.
Something not already seen in master shot, usually followed by the same previous shot.
Dissolve

Ducking
Decreasing the volume of one audio track so it “ducks” under other tracks
Dynamic
Style of editing in which rules of continuity can be broken. Juxtaposing seemingly unrelated images to create meaning.
Establishing shot
A wide shot which shows the surroundings of a subject.
Fade in/fade out

The number of separate images in one second of video (30 fps)
Insert shot
A close up of some object within the scene. A different angle of
something already in the master shot
Jump cut

avoided unless intentional/justified.
Master shot
A long shot showing the entire scene, from start to finish, from an angle that keeps all the actors in view
Montage
A series of images/clips put together in such a way that dissimilar materials
are juxtaposed to make a statement or create a meaning. Typically accompanied by
music or V.O.
Natural sound
The ambient/background sound at a given location
Pacing
The apparent speed of a video segment. Determined by shot length and transition type.

Rough footage
Video straight from the camera which has not yet been edited
