What is redlining?
Redlining defined whole neighborhoods as “high risk” and did not allow residents access to mortgages
Red: hazardous, most financial risk, “do not lend” (~30%)
Health conditions/outcomes correlated with redlining
Chicago: cancer and mental health
Atlanta: asthma, poor mental health, less than 7 hours of sleep a night
San Francisco-Oakland: Bay View-Hunters Point has consistent poor health outcomes across the board, as well as Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley
Miami: stroke, poor mental health, poor sleep quality
What is culture?
Sharing a pattern of thinking, feeling, reacting, and problem-solving
Must be considered in historical, social, political, and economic contexts
Pattern of learned beliefs, values, and behaviors shared within a group (language, styles of communication, practices, customs, views on roles and relationships)
“Shared beliefs, values, and assumptions of a group of people who learn from one another and teach to others that their behaviors, attitudes, and perspectives are the correct ways to think, act, and feel”
What is cultural competence?
The ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures

What is cultural humility?
A personal lifelong commitment to self-evaluation and self-critique
Recognition of power dynamics and imbalances, a desire to fix those power imbalances and to develop partnerships with people and groups who advocate for others
