QUIZ 3 Flashcards
review of autonomic nervous system (ANS)
Controls all involuntary and subconscious systems. It has three principle functions:
1) regulation of the heart
2) regulation of secretory glands
3) regulation of smooth muscles.
Divides into Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nervous systems
Review of SNS
“Flight or fight”
-vasoconstriction
-dilate pupils
-increase heart rate/ BP
-dilated bronchi
-temp regulation
-inhibits digestion
-shunts blood away from skin and viscera, into skeletal muscles
Review of PSNS
“rest and digest”
-vasodilation
-constricted pupils
-decreased heart rate
-contracted bronchial smooth muscles
-GI secretion, peristalsis
-emptying of bowel and bladder
Somatic Nervous System
Controls voluntary skeletal muscles
Epinephrine
is an endogenous vasoactive catecholamine. It acts directly on both the alpha-and beta-adrenergic receptors of tissues innervated by the SNS. Used in emergency situations, like anaphylaxis
Adrenergic drugs produce effects similar to those of the which nervous system?
SNS sympathetic nervous system
If a patient is having a severe anaphylactic reaction to a dose of intravenous penicillin which medication would you give to reverse the effects?
Epinephrine
Patient teaching after the use of the epinephrine? Where would you take the patient after you use the medication?
EPI pen injections only contain one dose of epinephrine, so the symptoms may persist or start coming back. Instruct patient to go to the Emergency Room.
Sympathetic nervous system agonists. Adrenergic drugs have what kind of mechanism of action on the body?
Adrenergic drug’s mechanism of action is a direct-acting sympathomimetic. The drug binds directly to the receptor and causes a physiologic response. It stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and mimics the action of the SNS neurotransmitters.
When giving a beta-agonist what patients would you be conserved about, A patient which a high heart rate or low respiration?
You would be concerned about the patient with a high heart rate because Beta-agonists will increase heart rate even more.
What effect does Flomax have on the bladder?
Flomax is an alpha1-blocker, which would decrease resistance to urinary outflow. Flomax would relax muscles in the urinary tract, making it easier to urinate.
What is the main purpose of a beta blocker medication on the heart?
A beta-blocker medication would be given to lower hypertension, or blood pressure by lowering contractility which decreases stroke volume.
What condition is contraindicated when a patient is taking nonspecific/nonselective beta blockers - Angina, HTN, or glaucoma?
Angina
If you are going to administer a heart medication to lower the heart rate and the heart rate is 52 what would you do?
Do not administer the medication and contact the doctor, and document that medication was not given due to heart rate already being low.
Which medical condition is contraindicated if you want to take Sudafed? Diabetes, HTN, urinary incontinence?
HTN (hypertension)
