Quiz 2: Tissues Flashcards
What are 4 types of tissue?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
Where is epithelial tissue found?
Body surface, lining of body cavities
Where is muscle tissue found?
Inside of the heart
Where is connective tissue found?
All parts of the body
Where is nervous tissue found?
Spinal chord
Describe the structure of epithelial tissue.
Sheets of cells that cover the body’s surface/cavity
Tightly packed cells bound together by a specific junction
How are epithelial cells classified?
By how many layers are formed and the overall shape created by the tissue
What are the 5 characteristics that are shared by epithelial cells?
Polarity Specialized contacts Regeneration Supported by connective tissue Avascular (inverted)
What is the stem cell to all epithelial cells?
Mesenchyme
What are the components common to all connective tissue?
Cells and protein fibers provide overall support and amorphous ground substance is found in intestinal fluid and cell adhesion
What is the difference between epithelial tissue and connective tissue?
Epithelial tissue has fibers but connective tissue fibers are more developed
What are the types of muscle?
Muscle
Cardiac
Smooth
How do you tell muscle types apart?
Skeletal muscle – the specialized tissue that is attached to bones and allows movement.
Smooth muscle – located in various internal structures including the digestive tract, uterus, and blood vessels such as arteries.
Cardiac muscle – the muscle-specific to the heart.
How do the differences between muscle types related to their function?
Skeletal: Voluntary movement
Cardiac: Contracts the heart
Smooth: Involuntary movement
