What is the New South?
The Old South rested on Slavery and agriculture. The New South, as Grady put it; would “present a perfect democracy between small farms and industrialization”.
What are sharecroppers?
People (normally African Americans) who had no money or land. They would work the land of an owner and get half of the crop. They would need to rent all the equipment etc. from the owner and therefore barely received enough food to stay alive off. It’s a vicious cycle.
Who are the “Redeemers”?
Influential men in Politics that owned large amounts of land. They “saved the south” from yankee domination and a straightjacket of a purely rural economy.
Who are the Bourbons?
The opposition to the Redeemers. They wanted to save money and loaned out convicts (normally poor blacks) to farmers for labor because it was cheaper. They justified it by saying Blacks are inferior.
Who was Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer?
Led the exploration into the Black Hills. Miners were illegally getting into Sioux land.
What was the Great Sioux War?
One of the largest campaigns against Indians in U.S. History. It lasted 15 months long.
What are Ghost Dances?
A dance that was said to bring the savior to the Indian tribes. It scared the U.S. Soldiers.
What are the Range Wars?
Violent disputes between ranchers and farmers. They were cutting one another’s fences and spooking their cattle.
Who is Frederick Jackson Turner? What did he say?
Famous historian who said “Four centuries from the Discovery of America, at the end of a hundred years under the Constitution, the frontier has gone and with its going has closed the first period of American History.
