What is an Iron Clad Oath?
An Oath that Southern Officials had to give that said they never willingly armed the Confederacy etc.
What does the Military Reconstruction Act state?
That there is no legislate, govt. or adequate protection for life and property in existence in the rebel states. It gave voting rights to freed slaves and there were 5 military districts that kept the peace . Tennessee was exempt (ratified the 14th amendment).
What is the Freedman’s Bureau?
Government’s first foray into welfare. It was designed to cloth, feed, and provide shelter for freedmen. Officials also helped freedman look for jobs and overviewed their contracts to make sure that the south wouldn’t revert back into slavery.
What is the “Wade-Davis Bill”?
A plan developed by the Radical Republicans that required the majority of each state to take the Iron Clad Oath saying that they didn’t support the confederacy. Lincoln Vetoed it.
What are the “Black Codes”?
The Black Codes were designed to limit the freedom of freedmen and showed that the South was willing to get as close to slavery as possible.
What is the 14th amendment?
It gives a constitutional guarantee of basic citizenship for all Americans, including African Americans. It reaffirmed the citizenship of persons born or naturalized in the U.S. No state can deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
What is the KKK?
White Supremacy group that would spread hate towards blacks, promote fear of Blacks to the Whites, torture and kill black people etc.
What is the Tenure of Office Act?
Senate must give permission to the President before he removes any Federal Officeholder whom the Senate had confirmed.
What are carpetbaggers and Scalawags?
Carpetbaggers are Northern Whites that moved South in a hurry to grab political positions and influence. Scalawags were Native White Republicans who never wanted to secede.
What was the “Credit-Mobilier”?
A fake Construction Company run by the directors of the Union Railroad. It lined the pockets of those controlling both companies - Garfield (future Pres.) was in on the scandal.
What is the Compromise of 1877?
An informal and unwritten agreement that settled the 1876 Presidential Election and ended Reconstruction in the South
Who is Horace Greeley?
Presidential Candidate who lost to Grant. Promoted vegetarianism, socialism, and spiritualism.
