Quiz 11 Flashcards
Heart
- Composed of 4 chambers
• 2 atria
• 2 ventricles
2 Atria
2 small, upper, thin-walled chambers in the heart
Ventricles
2 larger chambers with thicker walls in the heart
Myocardium
- Thickest layer of the heart chambers
- Composed of cardiac muscle
Mammal Heart (Process)
- Right and left sides are separated by a SEPTUM (prevents the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood)
- Contraction of the heart chambers provides the force required to aid the movement of blood through the circulatory system
- Deoxygenated blood from the body is returned to the right atrium of the heart by the vena cavae
- From the right atrium, blood flows into the right ventricle
- When the right ventricle contracts, blood enters the pulmonary trunk (artery) and is transported to the lungs
- Oxygenated blood is returned to the left atrium by pulmonary veins
- The blood the enters the left ventricle and exits the heart through the aorta
- Valves are situated between the atria continuous with each semilunar valves
- the function of the VALVES is to prevent back flow of blood in the heart
Vena Cavae
• Largest veins in the body
Aorta
Largest artery in the body
Kidneys (4)
- definition
- location
- color
- function
- Paired organs
- lying between the dorsal body wall and the peritoneum (retroperitoneal)
- light brown
- function to filter the blood to form urine
Ureters
Tubes serving to transport urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder
Urinary Bladder
Stores the urine until voided from the body by the urethra
Adrenal Glands
(Endocrine Glands) embedded in adipose tissue and are situated on top of the kidneys
Testes
Located on separate compartments within the scrotum
Epididymis (4)
- definition
- shape
- location
- attached to …
• Sperm storage and maturation site
- is a comma-shaped organ
- situated on top of each testis
- Continuous with the vas deferens
Vas Deferens (2)
- definition
- attached to …
• Long, thin muscular tube serving to transport the sperm
- Connected to the urethra, which passes through the penis
Urethra
Plays a dual role in the male conducting urine for the urinary system and sperm for the reproductive system
