Quiz 1 Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
Contains only one kind of particle
Cannot be separated by physical means
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space
May be solid, liquid or gas
What is a mixture?
Combinations of particles that can be separated by physical means
What is an element?
Cannot be further decomposed
Represented on the periodic table by an atomic symbol.
What is a compound?
Chemical combination of 2 or more elements
Can be decomposed by chemical reaction
What is Homogeneous?
Different components of the mixture are not visible
Single phase
What is heterogeneous?
Different components of the mixture of visible
Possibly 1+ phase
What is a solution?
Composed of a solute and a solvent
What is a colloid?
Cannot see particles with the eye
Very thick and sticky
What is a suspension?
Particles in liquid settle out due to gravity
Can see with the eye
What is a mechanical mixture?
Particles can be distinguished
What are he aspects of the billiard ball model?
A theory by John Dalton
All matter is made up of small indivisible particles called atoms
Atoms cannot be created of destroyed
All atoms of an element are identical
Chemical reactions change the way atoms are grouped
The atoms was a solid uniform sphere
What are the aspects of the plum pudding model?
J.J. Thompson discovered electrons using a cathode Ray
An atom is a sphere of positive charge, with negative particles in it.
What was the Rutherford atomic theory?
Made by Ernest Rutherford who discovered that atoms have a nucleus.
The atom is mostly empty space but with a small positively charged core. (Nucleus)
The nucleus contains protons and neutrons while electrons moved around it
What are isotopes?
Elements that have different mass numbers
They can form when there is the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
