“Blah blah blah tummy hurts”
List 3 of the “sacred seven” when pertaining to patient history taking. Give an example of what you would ask for each.
- Quality - “Can you describe the type of pain you’re having? Is it
more of a sharp pain or an aching pain? - Aggravating factors - “Are your symptoms worse before or after
you eat?” - Localization - “Does it hurt when I apply pressure on this part
of your abdomen?”
Would you consider the following scenario qualitative or quantitative? Explain your reasoning.
“Your patient comes in complaining of abdomen pain. You give them the chart below and ask them to point to the face that is closest to how they are feeling at this time. They point to the orange face that corresponds to the number 6. (Chart is 1-10)
I would consider this qualitative information.
While it is technically a “measurement” of the patients personal level of pain, It does not provide enough specific and factual details to be considered quantitative. This is not enough information to tell me exactly what is causing their pain, the exact area of their pain, the timeline for how long the pain has subsided, etc.
List three ways you can let your patient know you are listening to what they are saying
Make eye contact
Answer all of their questions without skipping over any of them
Repeat what they said back to them
