Quiz 1 Flashcards
What is psychopharmacology?
the
study of drug-induced changes
in mood, thinking, and behavior.
What is drug action?
the biochemical process by which a drug produces its therapeutic effect or alters the body’s physiological response.
What is drug effects?
The measurable and predictable changes in physiological function or biological response are caused by the interaction of a drug with a specific receptor, enzyme, or other biological target.
What is side effects?
Additional, usually unwanted, consequences of drug treatment, often reversible and not necessarily harmful.
What is Therapeutic effects?
The primary reason for administering a drug, aiming to alleviate a symptom or disease process.
What is specific effects?
The distinct, measurable consequences of a drug’s action on biological systems.
What is nonspecific effects?
Adverse reactions or side effects experienced by patients taking medications, which are not directly related to the specific pharmacological action of the drug.
What is the placebo effect?
The measurable, positive health response that occurs in individuals who receive an inactive treatment, such as a sugar pill, saline injection, or sham surgery.
What is double-blind studies?
A research design where both the participants (subjects) and the researchers are unaware of which treatment group each participant is assigned to.
What 3 things are apart of drug naming?
Chemical name (7-chloro-1,3-
dihydro-1-methyl-5-phenyl-2H-
1,4-benzodiazepine-2-one), Generic name (diazepam), brand name (valium)
What is pharmacokinetics?
Influence how much drug is bioavailable?
What is enteral?
Oral (PO) most popular route & Rectal (suppository) can avoid first-pass metabolism.
What is intravenous (IV)?
Most rapid and accurate.
What is Intramuscular (IM)?
Slow, even absorption over time.
What is Intraperitoneal (IP)?
Injection into the abdominal cavity (usually done to small animals)
