Quiz 1 Flashcards
valves that are found on the large pump intake connections where the suction hose connects to the suction side of the fire pump
Butterfly Valves
the separation between the passenger compartment and the engine compartment
Bulkhead
a nozzle that can be placed in confined spaces such as cellars or basements. The nozzle spins, spreading water over a large area.
Bresnan distributor nozzle
vertical support members located between the front and rear doors of a motor vehicle
B-posts
a non collapsible hose used under positive pressure having an elastomeric or thermoplastic tube, a braided or spiraled reinforcement, and an outer protective cover. (NFPA 1962)
Booster Hose (booster line)
a smoke detection device that projects a narrow beam of light across a large open area from a sending unit to a receiving unit. When the beam is interrupted by smoke, the receiver detects a reduction in light transmission and activates the fire alarm.
Beam detector
a ladder equipped with tormentor poles, or stay poles, that stabilize the ladder during raising and lowering operations.
Bangor ladder
valves used on nozzles, gates wyes, and the engine discharge gates. They consist of a ball with a hole in the middle of the ball.
Ball Valves
an older type of wood frame construction in which the wall studs extend vertically from the basement of a structure to the roof without any fire stops
Ballon-frame construction
a fire set along the inner edge of a fire control line to consume the fuel in the path of a wild land fire or change the direction of force of the fire’s convection column. (NFPA 901)
Backfire
a deflagration (explosion) resulting from the sudden introduction of air into a confined space containing oxygen-deficient products of incomplete combustion. (NFPA 1403)
Backdraft
personnel who, in the course of their normal duties, could encounter an emergency involving hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and who is expected to recognize the presence of the hazardous materials/WMD, protect themselves, call for trained personnel, and secure the scene. (NFPA 1072)
Awareness level personnel
an organization, office, or individual responsible for enforcing the requirements of a code or standard or for approving equipment, materials, an installation, or a procedure. (NFPA 1, 1072)
Authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)
the crime of maliciously and intentionally, or recklessly starting a fire or causing an explosion. (NFPA 921)
Arson
a structure part of a structure or general geographic location within a fire scene, in which the “point of origin” of a fire or explosion is reasonable believed to be located. (NFPA 901)
Area of origin
