QUESTIONS TO PREPARE Flashcards
Tell me more about yourself.
Hi, I’m Pamela Gertrude B. Roque. I’m a Hospitality Management graduate from La Consolacion University Philippines. Ever since freshman year, I’ve been looking forward to doing my internship, so I look forward to being able to apply all the skills and knowledge that I have learned effectively. I’m a self-driven person who’s always willing to learn and passionate about the things I like.
What do you like?
I like hearing stories. That’s why I enjoy reading books and talking with people. You either relate to it or learn new things. And I’m passionate about learning. Making most of the opportunities to learn, improve and develop. That’s why I apply for an internship abroad because the fact that I’m surrounded by a different environment, culture, and people would be a rewarding professional experience for me
Why did you choose F&B?
- I grew up in a family where we mostly hosted and held huge family gathering events. Being in the kitchen preparing food for the next day’s event, then, on the day of the event, I would be fixing the decorations and set all the tables and chairs, I believe this builds my passion for hospitality. In fact, most of my family is in the food and beverage industry; two of my uncles are restaurant waiters, and one of my aunts is a former head bartender, so I’ve always been inspired and influenced to be in the service industry.
Tell me about your experiences
- I completed two training. The first is with BarCIE International Center, where I get to train in several hotel departments. From the front office, where we handle guest reservations. Through the food and beverage department, where we get to do a table setting and taught how to handle different guest complaints. Second, I completed a three-month training at World Wide Internship Philippines which is now called Ediphi. I get to learn vital skills in many divisions of the hospitality industry. From the front office, housekeeping, cruise line management training, and more especially with food and beverage training. Where we get to do even menu planning, pos simulation and a lot more. I believe the experiences and skills that I have learned will enable me to perform my duties in the food and beverage department to the best standard.
Why do you want to apply for this position?
- I want to apply and share my expertise from 4 years of learning and experience. I’ve always been passionate about serving others, which led me to pursue hospitality management as my course. Ever since I was a kid, our family used to dine at restaurants or stay in hotels, so I’ve always been amazed at how dynamic the role is in the hospitality industry. How every employee has a different set of skills and professionally gives a high-quality service. I want to be able to give customer satisfaction and embody professionalism as well.
What is professionalism for you?
For me, professionalism is how an individual presents herself with integrity, accountability, and has the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately fulfilling her responsibilities with excellency.
Why do you want to go to the USA/France/Spain?
- My mother has worked on cruise ships since I was a child, and I remember asking her if ever we get to travel together abroad where would it be?, she immediately said the US. So, at first, it was just a country I wanted to visit, but as I grew and dreamed about my future, it became more than that. For me, it will be a wonderful opportunity to get the best training possible and to work in a country where the majority of the world class hotels and restaurants and innovative developments in the hospitality industry are happening. Aside from that, I believe it will literally help me grow outside of my comfort zone. It will be a great chance for me to further develop my social and cultural skills, especially working in a diverse workplace.
Why do you want to work here at this hotel?
Aside from the fact that it is Hyatt where it is known and voted for one of the best companies to work for. It would be a great opportunity as an FNB trainee to work at Hyatt Lost Pines since it has multiple restaurants which would enable me to utilize my skills at the highest standard. But Most of all, I’m most excited about applying my experience when it comes to catering to families, large groups, or events which Hyatt Lost Pines is a place known for.
What are your strengths?
- Being the eldest among my two siblings, I believe I have developed the ability to lead and work effectively in a team. That eventually helped me to productively lead our research team and multiple projects that achieve an excellent result. By establishing good communication with each of them and encouraging them to work where they are best at and always be willing to learn.
What are your weaknesses?
- My greatest weakness would be writing. I’ve always disliked writing essays ever since I was a student. I think I’m having a hard time conveying my thoughts into a whole neatly written paragraph. But I remember someone just told me that I just need to write it all out. Write all my thoughts into the paper and pour it all out because then later if I look at it will be just like pieces of a puzzle that I can be able to put all together. I know that advice will help me gradually overcome that weakness and won’t prevent me from being efficient or successful in my work because I’m prepared to put in the effort to improve as an F&B trainee. This will enable me to go above and beyond what is expected of me.
Tell me about your greatest accomplishment.
- There is one that I can recall from the previous project that I led. It was for our marketing class. The goal is to create a marketing video about a certain topic assigned to us. No one in our team knew how to edit a video, and since I’m passionate about creative stuff, I volunteered to direct and edit our video. For two straight days, I taught myself by watching different marketing videos and editing tutorials. To our surprise, our professor suddenly played our video for the whole class to see, and much more surprising is that our professor gave us an exception for our final exam due to the exceptional video project that we made. It was a memorable and rewarding experience for all of us.
Tell me about a time that you failed
- One of my eldest cousins has a baking business, which I’m currently helping manage and package orders for. It was very hectic that day because we got a lot of orders since there was also a huge order for a birthday party when suddenly one of our customers messaged us to say that they received a different set of cupcakes. Since I was the one handling the packaging, it was my mistake that I may have overlooked and gotten confused with the orders. I immediately apologized for the mistake that had occurred, which the customer kindly accepted and understood. I also apologized to my cousin for causing trouble for her business. It was a lesson learned for me to always double-check or create a guide list with me to stay organized and avoid confusion.
How do you see yourself 5-10 years from now?
- I see myself 5 to 10 years from now still happily working in the hospitality industry. I know that is a hard process but hopefully, with my determination and passion, I believe that I will eventually be in a managerial position. It has always been my dream to lead a team of professionals in the industry to deliver high-quality customer service that would lead to the success of both the employees and the hotel.
What can you contribute to the team?
- My ability to work under pressure and willingness to take action anytime a situation occurs—I guess this comes mainly from being the eldest child along with my passion for helping others— this means I always want everyone and everything to be attended to. So, I believe this set of characteristics and the experience that I have would be my greatest asset because I can always be relied upon to respond right away to guests’ concerns in the best way possible.
What is your favorite duty or responsibility as a Kitchen staff / FO / FNB?
- Being able to deliver high-quality service and exceed customer expectations. Seeing that the customer is satisfied not only with the food you delivered but as well on how you deliver. It would be rewarding to see your guest enjoy and leave with a wonderful experience.
