Questions People Might Have Flashcards
When it rains do you get more water seeping into the caverns?
Not right away, the water has to travel through the soil and rock before we see it here. Some parts of the caverens water may be here shortly after a rainfall begins and in other areas it can be days and even weeks.
What is the driest time of the year?
It depends on our weather. Generally that would be winter time, because the ground on the surface is frozen. Except if there would be a mild winter with temperatures above freezing, then instead of snow we would have rain.
What is the wettest time of the year?
That would be in late winter and early spring when we get the meltin of the winter snows and the spring rains
If it rained very hard would we be in danger of being trapped in here from rapidly raising river water?
No, the river will rise very slowly because the rain must first pass through the soil and rock to feed it. The river is not fed by surface run off.
Why are there no fish in the Lost River?
There is no food chain to support them, nor is there any access for them to get into tne caverns.
When it rains heavily outside do the caverns flood out?
Generally no. When you get heavy rain it is more likely to run off the soil and flow into surface streams than seep into the ground and influence the caverns.
Are there any unexplored parts of the caverns?
The caverns have been thoroughly explored. There remains only one area and that is where the river exits the caverns. The passageway in this area is too small to explore with scuba and is rarely dry to explore.
Why are there no bats in the cave?
The caverns has no bat accessable entrance. Originally the caverns had no entrancd, so bats were never really a part of the cave’s environment.
Did dinosaurs live in the cave?
No, the caverns formed after the age of the dinosaurs and even if the caverns did exist there was no entrance.
Did native Americans use the caverns?
No, the caverns did not have an entrance until 1883.
What might happen if we had an earthquake?
Probably nothing, earthquakes are not as violent underground as they are on the surface. One must also remember that earthquakes are not a recent development and the caverns have come through them in the past.
