Questions FOR College Coaches Flashcards
Have you had a chance to see me play and what role do you see me playing on your team (PO? 2-way?)?
If the coach hasn’t seen you play or isn’t familiar with your hitting, maybe add something along the lines of: I’m glad you were able to see me pitch at ___. I’m also really proud of my hitting stats … I finished in the top 4 batting performance in both Perfect Game’s 2023 Freshman World Championship in West Palm as well as the 15U World Wood Bat National Championship in Atlanta a few weeks ago. This summer my batting average was .425 with an OBP of .576 on a team that was ranked 11th nationally by Perfect Game. I also led my high school team in hitting with a batting average of .406 and an OBP of .496.
What are your recruiting needs for the class of 2026 in terms of position?
Do they need pitchers? 1B?
(Very uncomfortable question - if you’re comfortable asking it) Where am I on your board and how many recruits are in front of me?
This is an uncomfortable question - but does see how transparent the coach will be with you - both as a recruit and as a future player.
How do you see the NCAA’s proposed rules on roster size impacting your recruiting?
Will the coach be reducing the number of freshmen recruits?
How do your players balance their academics and athletics? How do they handle missing class for away trips during the season?
See how much support the coach and school offer for academics
Do players have study hall hours each week? If so, how many? What academic support resources are available?
Again, see how much support the coach and school offer for academics
What does a typical practice schedule look like during the offseason? During the season?
Does the team have morning workouts? Afternoon? How do those workouts fit in with classes?
How would the players describe your (or the head coach’s) coaching style?
Is the coach hands-on or hands-off? How do they communicate with players?
How would the players describe your team’s culture?
Are teammates supportive of each other and function as a team? Or is it more competitive and individualized?
Beyond skillset, what you are looking for in the players you recruit?
What kind of person is the coach looking for? What kind of culture is the team assembling?
How involved are alumni, students, the faculty and the community in the program? What’s the atmosphere like on game days?
Does the program get a lot of support from the school? Will you be playing in front of fans who truly care?
What can I do to make myself more prepared to play for [NAME OF COLLEGE]?
This may give you some insight into what the coach things you should work on.
What makes this team, coaching staff and school different from other similar schools? What’s your favorite part of being at [NAME OF COLLEGE]?
You will likely be comparing several schools that are in the same conference and are of similar size. This may help you understand how they distinguish themselves or what they think makes them better.
Coach, thank you so much for your time today. I really enjoyed speaking with you. What is the next step in the recruiting process for me with [NAME OF COLLEGE]?
End every single real conversation with a college coach with this question. The coach may want to see more film or you playing live, may need updated transcripts, want you to attend a camp, etc. This will save a lot of stress about what next step to take.
Not during first call … but eventually ask… What happens if a player gets injured?
How does team and trainer help with rehab? Does scholarship still apply if out of part or all of a season?
