Q

Describe the integration between osteoblasts and osteoclasts in bone formation.

A

Size of a bone increases as osteoblasts build new bone on the outer surface of the bone while osteoclasts increase the size on the medullary cavity by breaking down existing bone.
NOTE: once a bone has reached its mature size this process of osteogenesis and reabsorption continues to take place but is in balance with each other in the healthy individual.

Q

How does bone growth occur?

A

Bone ossification occurs from the synthesis of bones organic matrix by osteoblasts, followed immediately by the calcification of this matrix.

This ossification begins in the diaphysis and in the epiphysis progressing towards the epiphyseal plates which are the last to ossify when a person reaches skeletal maturity.
