what is a questionnaire?
A set of written questions, closed or open, used to assess a person’s thoughts or experiences.
what is a structured interview?
a LIVE encounter (face to face or phone) where the interviewer asks questions to assess the interviewee’s thoughts and experiences.
what is an unstructured interview?
A live encounter where the interviewer asks questions which may DEVELOP as the interview goes on.
(no structure or set of questions)
what is the advantage of a questionnaire over an interview?
-it is COST-EFFECTIVE, as it is distributed to large amounts of people so it gathers information quicker.
-completed WITHOUT the researcher needing to be present.
-produces data EASY to analyse
what is the advantage of an interview over a questionnaire?
- Flowing and participant can elaborate their answers, as FACE TO FACE, better explanation
-straight forward and easy to replicate due to STANDARDISED FORMAT.
why might researcher choose to use open and closed questions?
OPEN:
-no FIXED answers, free to answer anyway
-produces QUALITATIVE data
CLOSED:
-answers are easy to analyse since there’s limited options.
