to gain CONSENT from each participant
(given to parents/guardians if the participant is under 16)

what is the advantages of explaining the purpose of the study?
-reduces D.C’s and investigator effects by STANDARDISING what is said by researcher and so, standardising the EXPERIENCE of the participants.
what is the purpose of a debrief?
-deal with the ethical issues of deception
-ask any questions
-final right to withdraw data
what is standardisation?
Using EXACTLY the same procedures, environment, information and instructions for ALL participants e.g. standardised instructions
what is randomisation?
Use of CHANCE when designing MATERIALS and ORDER of conditions e.g. order of a word list: put all of the words into a hat and then the first 20 words will be in word list A and the rest in B
