Experimental designs Flashcards
what is a repeated measures design?
all participants experience all conditions of the experiment. the same people in each condition.
what happens in an independent group design?
participants only experience one group condition.
different people in each condition
what happens in a matched pairs design?
pairs of participants are matched on participant variables which could affect the DV
E.G. age, gender.
One member of each pair is randomly allocated to each condition
what are the advantages of using independent groups?
-avoids order effects, as participants only do one condition.
what are the advantages of using repeated measures design?
-fewer participants are needed as the same people are in each condition.
-minimises participant variables.
what are the advantages of using matched pairs design?
-avoids order effects as participants are only doing one condition
-minimises participant variables, as they are matched up on certain important variables.
what are the disadvantages of using independent groups?
-larger number of participants required, as two seperate groups are needed.
-participant variables may affect results as there are diff people in each group.
what are the disadvantages of using repeated measures design?
-order effects (boredom, tired, practise) as same poeple.
-different sets of materials needed.
-demand characteristics as the aim is easier to guess.
what are the disadvantages of using matched pairs design?
-difficult to achieve a good match and it’s time consuming
(sometimes not everyone will match with someone else, and the matching can not be perfect every time.)
